To secure maritime passage and the representation of shared interests, merchants were already joining forces by the middle of the 12th century to create a guild, thereby clearing the way for the birth of the Hanseatic League. Following the Hanseatic tradition, 12 medium-sized shipping merchants from the lower Elbe region have pooled their resources in order to work together to meet the existing marketing challenges. The Hanse Ship Management AG based in Stade currently consists of around 84 ships with a total carrying capacity of 900.000 tons. As a result, Hanse Ship Management AG is the largest association of shipping companies in Lower Saxony.
